Educational Leadership In The P-12 Setting Analysis

There a plethora of concerns, as it relates to educational leadership in the P-12 setting. Understandably, some issues are more unyielding than others. Therefore, school leaders must determine the issues deemed most prevailing to them, with respect to their present setting. I’ve spent my entire career thus far in the same school system. For 17 years, I worked in a P-8 setting. However, for the past two years, I have worked in a high school setting. Ironically, I’ve noticed that the issues haven’t changed. Instead, I’m just managing them on the secondary level. The three most challenging issues in relation to educational leadership that I’ve faced are literacy, student motivation, and teacher shortage and teacher capacity. More often than not, students are entering school with little or no literacy skills. Furthermore, there are an alarming number of students who lack the motivation or enthusiasm for learning, even during an era where technology is at the forefront. It then becomes a tremendous undertaking to catch students up who have fallen through the cracks in the areas of reading comprehension, fluency, and sight-word reading. Unfortunately, many of our struggling students are poverty stricken, which logically impedes their readiness to learn. In 2001, the No Child Left Behind Act sought to address the needs of the all students who may have been left been. More recently, the Literacy-Based Promotion Act was passed to ensure that students were deemed functionally literate before being promoted to the fourth grade. There is a direct correlation between the numbers of students who have moved through the school system without developing functional literacy in the early grades and the drop-out rates and low achievement scores in later
