It started with a dream which emerged from my subconscious nearly two years ago and influences me to this day. In this dream, I was on a stage preparing to present to a crowd in acceptance of an award. Before I was to speak, a video introduction played and I introduced myself as “Paris Wicker, Dean of Empathy.” Frequent self-analysis and deconstruction of this dream has provided greater insight into my career and professional aspirations to be an empathic higher education executive leader. While many factors must exist to make this desire a reality, successful acceptance and completion of a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA), remains a crucial and necessary component of this dream to come to full fruition.
Now, in my ninth year of working in higher education, I greatly benefit from the opportunity to work directly with, and for, specific college student populations. Most recently through student affairs is where I discovered my niche; combining opportunities to support, advocate, and transform the college experience for students. Remaining in higher education and ultimately obtaining an executive leadership position would allow me to combine my passions in student success with empathic leadership and decision making. As a nationally certified counselor, I use counseling skills in everyday work as an educator, particularly listening, genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and especially, empathy.
