Teenagers around the world have taken the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), a test that is administered every three years in order to compare national education systems. The test focuses largely on math and includes smaller sections in reading and science. The intention of the test is to provide a glimpse of the global state of education. In the article “American Schools vs. the World: Expensive, Unequal, Bad at Math”, after the results were released, many said “the U.S. education system is mediocre compared to the rest of the world, according to an international ranking of OECD countries" (Hunt). Additionally, relative scores in math remained about the same in the United Sates between 2003 and 2006, while many other countries had improved tremendously. Education is an industry that is clearly in need of disruptive innovation. Disruptive innovation is described as a small enterprise that attacks a new market of customers and offers a substitution product that eventually begins to challenge leaders of the industry. It is apparent that success in the education industry is crucial because education is an investment into the future. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for creativity in the industry in order to encourage competition in a difficult market.
