They were raised by single mothers in the inner city of Baltimore. The inner city prevents people from succeeding in their career because of lack of resources and jobs. If individuals are exposed to drug and violence at a young age, they are more likely to experience the same fate. For example, Wes Moore brother Tony lived with his father at the Murphy Homes Project which was considered an urban neighborhood. Tony became another statistic by becoming a drug dealer and dropping out of high school, but Tony was adapting to his environment for survival. Survival is more important than education because they view education as a waste of time. Will education prevent them from being robbed or getting shot? Education will provide opportunities such as a stable income but will not prevent any situations from happening. The parents can influence their children by stressing education but if the parents are not modeling after themselves, how are their kids going to follow? Children learn from observation and are easily influence, so it’s important for the parents to follow through on their words. People may speak different languages and live in a different world, but they all experience the same
