Magnet Education

US Department of Education defines Magnet schools as public or charter schools that contain a specialized curriculum (2014). These curricula can vary from subjects such as science like the Bronx School of Science, or flight training at Rancho High School Academy of flight. Both programs qualify as magnet schools, however, the Bronx school is a magnet school within itself. Most programs exist within schools that provide a normal high school. These programs are more plentiful as they do not require the program to own their own facilities. Schools accomplished this draw by appealing to parents and students alike. These schools began to offer different courses in the major specialties like Math, Science, and Literature. The schools also offered specialty courses where students of similar interests and ideals could explore and move forward in their designated fields of study. Consequentially the need for these specialized programs of instruction caused these schools to higher specialized instructors, and this led to students gaining a rounded education and therefore a higher likelihood of success. According to Dr. Gamoran a noted researcher in education when speaking of the facts regarding magnet program proficiencies, “Further analyses tested the sensitivity of the results to assumptions about independence and selectivity; these showed support for the magnet school advantages in reading and social studies,” (p. 16, 1996) This will lead these students into the fields of study and give them the ability to become a multiplier to advance the field as a way to give …show more content…
They became a jumping point for students to move forward into careers that peaked their interests. As with all things the more interest a group of individuals place on something the more success that group will have with it. Students enrolled in magnet programs are more likely to graduate high school, they are more likely to maintain their education within a chosen field, and they are more likely to succeed in their endeavors if offered the opportunity to excel. It is through heat and pressure that diamonds are made, so to it is through stress and work that magnet school graduates are able to succeed along a positive
