John Dewey: A Personal Analysis

By the dictionary’s definition, education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. Philosopher, John Dewey believes that “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” My thoughts on education are to embrace its difficulty and understand that it will eventually pay off. It took me just about fourteen years to come to this mature realization. My educational path has taught me three things: do not give up, you’re way smarter than you know, and becoming educated is completely necessary in order to attain a worthwhile career. School was never my strong suit; in fact, I consistently struggled from a young age to compete with my brilliant classmates as we studied at a private, Baptist school. Since day one, people would always ask me, what do you want to be when you grow up? Most kids would say they wanted to be a fireman, a doctor, a veterinarian, or a policeman. I tried a local, public high school for a semester, but the large amounts of studying didn’t fit my tennis regime. I also found going to school was harder than I remembered and I couldn’t keep up with all the work. I decided to try online school thinking it would be a better fit for me. This way I could play all the tennis I wanted to. I started to get really good at the sport and people were definitely taking notice. Because of this I actually ended up doing online school fully until I was a senior. I lost two years of school however, because all of sophomore year I spent playing tennis for six hours a day. When I quit tennis during junior year I realized I needed to get a high school diploma. This resulted in me having to cram two years of classes into a year and hardly a summer.
