Behind The Closed Doors In The Classroom

Throughout my education I have often wondered, through the unending parade of menial assignments and busywork, what school is for. My fellow students seems to be doing better than I was, or at least their grades showed they did. What showed up in their report cards was not really a valid way to measure students. Their grades never reflected what they took away from the classroom, the influences of their families and the community on their education, or for that matter what they were beginning to understand of the world. Thus far in this class I have come to the understanding that education is not just what goes on behind the closed doors in the school. Education is much more comprehensive and the purpose of school is only a means to an end, as learning continues far beyond the classroom.

In order to receive a truly holistic education, students need to be influenced by diverse population as well. True well they can learn facts and figures about other cultures and religions, it won 't really stick unless they have an example of it. Diversity is an opportunity to be open and understanding to another human being. It gives kids a chance to be compassionate and learn about others, the differences and similarities and the way they live their lives separate from their own.
As a future educator, having learned so much in such a short period of time, I obviously have a lot to think about. My group and I haven 't had the opportunity to visit any schools yet, however with such a rich material, we have a decent grasp on what we believe would be a truly wonderful school. Personally, when I become a teacher, I want the kids I teach to leave my classes more well-rounded individuals with an open mind and a giving heart. Before this class I didn 't really understand how I can achieve that. In the short time I 've had here, I 've begun to learn how to do that
