Throughout our educational career we are often told, “Always study, don’t stop going to school, listen to your teachers and do what they tell you to do” because education is important and without it we would work at Mc Donald’s for the rest of our lives. But if we only listen and do what we are told to do don’t we become machines? Education should be used to help us critically think and open our mind to the information that is out there, to make us strong leaders and not weak followers. I have a seven-year-old sister, whom is very smart. She likes to learn new things every day, by asking questions and always keeping a very open mind; she has always been this way and since she began school it has always been a problem between home and her …show more content…
One of the classes last semester that I enjoyed very much was Honors 111, our professor was very nice and always found a way to involve the students in his lectures, mostly discussion. At least to me, he helped me open my mind about the issues that happen around the globe, to think outside the box, to see farther than the news lead us to believe. I believe the honors college uses the problem-posing education or as Freire mentioned “The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach”(Freire, pg.324 P.1). This semester my classes continue to meet my expectations if not exceed them, I feel like I am able to learn without having to sit in front of a book and memorize a chapter verbatim. Problem-posing education gives the students room to think critically, give their own opinion and grow a strong open …show more content…
Some educators like to feel powerful and want to dominate the students with their information, however in the year 2016 with all this civic movements, and the future presidential elections we as a society cannot afford to let educators govern our mind, we must go further, for example learn on our own grab a couple of books get together with friends and recreate the lecture in a way that everyone understands the “why, what and how”, we must fight for the freedom of our mind. In the short essay “Other Voices, Other Rooms” by Gerald Graff, he discusses the different styles of teaching and why some work and some set students up for failure. As a college student, I agree with a lot of what he states and I understand his meanings completely. He points out that the way students are taught makes students struggle. Teachers will give students tons of information in each class and it is hard for them to distinguish what is what. They become confused and can’t focus on the big picture.…

INTRODUCTION Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been and are critical drivers of social mobility and social change in the Black community. Since their founding they have had missions to provide access and opportunity for Black people when they were excluded or denied admittance elsewhere. Today, HBCUs continue close the societal and economic gaps that exist for Black people in America. HBCUs represent just three percent of institutions of higher education, enroll less than ten percent of African Americans in higher education, but graduate more than 17 percent of African American bachelor degrees and more than 24 percent of African American bachelor degrees in STEM fields (NCES, 2016).…

We live in a century where we go about our day without ever reflecting on our constant hard work. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely and formally thank you for all you have done and made possible in helping me progress throughout my time here at SPC. My experience as a member of the Honors College has enhanced my life through the fellowship, better course environments, and the exceptional research conference opportunities and exposure that your leadership has provided. From a student’s standpoint ― especially an “unconventional” student such as myself ― you have given not only fresh and unique opportunities to myself and our membership, but you have given your heart and soul with the purpose of adding an advanced and totally positive learning environment. I know many Honors College alumni privately express this very same message to you ― but your total giving of time, energy, creativity, and true caring should receive far more formal acknowledgement.…

I feel that in life, it is important that I always improve myself and make myself into a better person everyday. Sometimes, when I perform a task for someone else or do a favor for them, I gain a sense of accomplishment and feel like I did my job as a human being to give to people who can’t do certain tasks for themselves. This idea of helping others has always been intertwined in my personality. Although I always tried to have a positive impact on many people, I still feel that I have not done enough, prior to an important event which occurred in my life only about 1 year ago, I had some selfish qualities about myself and in certain situations, I put myself before others who couldn’t help themselves. When I was elected to national Honor Society…

George argues that critical pedagogy enables students and society to actively practice principles of equality, liberty, and justice and is also known to be empowering, liberatory, radical or engaged pedagogy. Critical pedagogy overlaps with other pedagogies, such as feminism or cultural studies, but its “commitment to education for citizenship” defines it from the other practices” (78). Based on Freire’s work, critical pedagogy focuses on developing students to “define, analyze, and problematic the economic, political, and cultural forces that shape their lives” rather than treating them like a piggy bank and depositing information into their brain (78). The field grew out of the dissatisfaction with the conservative education reforms of…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

Section 4: Differentiating Instruction through Technology When considering the importance of a student-centered classroom an educator must remember that “it is not about what the teacher is doing or what the teacher has done; it’s about what the students are doing and what the students can do in the future”. (Tarte, 2013) Education within school has certainly changed quickly these days. The way an educator once believed that students should be sitting quietly as the teacher stood up in front of the class gushing out information and insight for their brains to grasp is no longer the case.…
