In the American society, education is culturally valued and we are expected to go to college. There is this social pressure to go to a four year college after graduating from high school and then graduate from college with a bachelor’s degree. According to society that’s the only way you will be successful. Then, there is also the individual’s sense of choice in going to college. For me, it was a little of both. I was pressured to go to college by my parents, friends, high school teachers, and counselors because of this idea that more doors will open up to me if I do so. But at the same time, I also decided that I wanted to go to college because it will give me something to do and provide me with the skills I need in today’s society while also allowing me to obtain that degree in my profession. I want that degree in my profession to be able to say that I did it and because of the same idea that with that degree, more doors will open up to me.
Ultimately people go to college in the hope that once they graduate there are more job opportunities available to them. However, a college education is more than just academics and job opportunities. There are many more benefits of a college education personally and socially.
