In a world in where unstable economy and indecisive times are adults’ main concern, issues as providing special education children with a proper education does not seem as crucial to most. However, as a special educator it is my duty to voice concerns about the major issues that special education is facing at this time. Our schools at any level from the classroom setting to school’s districts face many crucial concerns such as lack of parental and public support, amount of paperwork, scheduling issues, training and supervising paraprofessionals, scheduling and making time to collaborate with regular education teachers. However, being a special education teacher my main concern is the misunderstanding about mainstreaming/inclusion within …show more content…
Some have stated that mainstreaming special needs students in their classroom can promote negative attitudes about the special needs student, especially if the regular child is receiving more attention from the teacher. On the same token, some special needs educators and parents argued that in some districts are reluctant to provide special needs students with the specialize services that need due to budget issues. Some parents have stated that regular education teachers since they are not trained in special education teaching and assessments methods; they place unrealistic academic and social emotional demands on special needs students. Many educators have argued that mainstreaming is more of a civic movement developed t as a result of the civil rights movement in the country in the late 60’s rather than a research based educational practice. In this 21st century, mainstreaming practice will corroborate and support all forms of equality and equity in the classroom. Since, mainstreaming special needs students produces great change on the part of all educators, parents and students themselves, this process requires careful preparation, and training and support for all teachers involved the students’ education. Staff trainings must reflect specific strategies for instruction, including best education practices and a variety of classroom management techniques appropriate for the special needs population. Expectations, knowledge and support must be clear to all participants. All educators involved with special needs mainstreamed in their classroom must to have collaboration time set aside with the special needs teacher on regular basis embedded in their daily program. Taking into consideration that the regular teacher is the expert in the content area and the special needs teacher is the expert in the special needs area including but not limited to the understanding disabilities, resources needed to succeed, classroom management, modifying curriculum and assessments to name a few. Teachers’ roles will switch in order to benefit the students. The special need educator will become a direct support to regular
