Every since I was a wee child, I have always thought the purpose of education is to prepare students for the real world. Though, after experiencing public school, I completely disagree. In the article, “On the Purpose of a University Education”, Weber mentions education has become more of a business rather than furthering of knowledge. I believe that college education has become a business, as well as a status symbol. What if there is an incredible mind out there, that has the ability to find a cure for cancer but this person doesn’t have the money or the opportunity to use their mind. If you haven’t seen Idiocracy (Idiocracy), I highly suggest you do, this movie is about an average twenty-first century American being signed up for a hibernation program for the military. He wakes up five hundred years later surrounded by idiots and he is now the smartest person on earth. This movie sounds like it’s really dumb but there is a lot of truth to it. For instance all of the well educated people waited to have children until they were prepared financially and that time just never came. On the other hand the not so well educated people (the idiots) had twenty children because they didn’t understand how it will affect the future of America. “[Education] should also develop in him the ability to make the best use of his personality, surroundings and circumstances so that he may accomplish the maximum in life for himself and for others. There are tremendous latent possibilities which are never unfolded by young people during their student life, the most precious time for laying the foundations of their careers” (Yogi 228). I currently work at Target and my parents always told me to keep the same job through college so I look good on a resume. My question is how is dealing with angry soccer moms all day is going to help me with my future career? I don’t know either. The whole point of college is kind of to get your job but I believe there is a reason behind why we have required general education courses. Without our general education courses how will anyone ever think of anything more than their job? Society will become an army of scary simple minded robots, kind of like certain communist countries (no offence if your into communism and what not). The whole purpose of life as a whole in my opinion is to better the world for the next generation. Without education what would this world be? The purpose of education is to make the world a better place. To make the world a better place we will need well informed citizens to prevent ignorance, socially capable citizens, as well as a continuous passing of knowledge between
