In 2012, the United States rated seventeenth of fifty in education. This allegedly isn’t a very far leap from being one of the best. Yet, falling behind seems to be an ongoing habit as the U.S falls lower and lower within the educational ranks. A student’s mental health can be vital to their educational experience and should be aided as much as possible by school officials. In 2000, a study had shown that students possessed the same amount of anxiety as those in a psychiatric hospital in the 1950’s. Another study in 2013 had shown that 27% of all students had been so depressed that they felt they were unable to properly function. There should be measures to ensure all students are receiving mental health as needed. Those who are depressed or anxious may have a tough time during class and would have a decrease in academic performance due to something completely out of their control. Even a simple thing such as an extended and considerate deadline for those with mental health disabilities could mean all the difference.
It may also be helpful if schools focused on a student’s home life. Home life is a very vital part of student success. If a student is not encouraged to do well at home, then they may not feel the need to do well in school. Parent participation in student life is important to ensure that their child grows to understand the importance of education in their life. Schools should coincide with social workers and other government officials or even just teach educators the signs that there is a lack of encouragement at
