The grades are divided into three major parts. During grades one through six, students attend a primary school, then three years of middle school and lastly three years of high school. Nine basic subjects are taught: moral education, Korean language, math, science, physical education, music, fine arts, and practical language (Diem, Levy and VanSickle). In 2013 the graduation rate in South Korea was 94% (Lepi). Education is looked at very differently being very important and determines social status and even who one will marry (Dalporto). South Koreans put education first and they believe that education has an “underlying moral purpose” (Lepi 2). Parents spend about 25% of their income on schooling to make sure their child has a good education, including materials their child will need and tutors (Lepi). Students and parents are not the only people who take education seriously teachers are a very important component of the education system.
A teacher’s day starts at 7:30 A.M. and ends around 5:00 P.M. including half day on Saturdays (Diem, Levy and VanSickle). Teachers are also honored for their hard work and dedication. Their pay and social status support that, but becoming a teacher is very hard with very few people leaving the career every year (Dalporto). With the education being so good in South Korea they have a very low unemployment rate with only 3.4%. This shows that students are getting the proper education to get and keep
