September 25, 1942 marks the day that four thousand children marched through Washington D.C. to kick off “Schools at War”. Moreover, this was a federal program that enlisted the school-age population to join the war effort on the home front. In an effort by both the Department of the Treasury and the Office of Education, the program gave children the opportunity to “save, serve, and conserve.” Moreover, the children saved their money in the form of war bonds and stamps while serving their communities, schools, and nations as volunteers. Additionally, the children ate all the food on their plates, utilized school supplies sparingly, mended broken toys, stitched rags and clothing, and recycled the material that could be used for war.
