Education growing up was never my focus. However, after years of dead end jobs my perspective changed. I gained a value for education, and a desire to achieve one. With that, I started my pursuit to earning my general education degree.
In June of 2015 I began my journey towards completing my goal of earning a higher education. The first step was earning my general education diploma. I worked towards earning my general education degree by studying online with My Illinois G.E.D and Khan University. I studied every single day for a solid two weeks. Once my grades online were sufficient I reserved my spot to begin testing.
Walking in, the room was a yellow tint with pealing walls. Small cramped cubical spaces lined the walls. There was scribbles on the desk, and the faint smell of musk. The computers were old and outdated, but sufficient enough for the job. I sat down and the chair leaned back just a little further than it should have. I thought to myself “what a crummy place.” However, I was there, and there wasn’t any turning

However, I was unpleasantly surprised to find the cramped cubical spaces completely filled. I was stuck between two people. The woman to my right was eating sunflower seeds. Sucking and smacking her big disgusting lips. Concentrating began to feel nearly impossible. I looked over to the sign that read no food or drinks and rolled my eyes in disgust. I was frustrated, and again worried I had failed. I got home and imminently checked my email. There was nothing. Finally almost two hours later I received word I had passed. With that I scheduled social studies for the following

I slithered through the group of people crowding the fine arts room and sat in the back corner. I prayed that I would have an extra day to go over my video, that in my opinion thoroughly sucked. Long, wide roads, small houses, and steel fences were my view as I walked into an unfamiliar building called Thomas Jefferson Middle School. I did not know anything about the culture or the language; a huge chill came over me, which I have never felt before. I felt goose bumps as I first walked in the building. The building was old and was not well cared for. The colors of the walls were fading and the elevators made the sound of a dying animal when it moved.…

"I entered the classrooms with the conviction that it was crucial for me and every other student to be an active participant, not a passive consumer" (Hooks 254). Most students go to school because they have to learn, but most of the time they are not learning, instead they are being taught or spoon fed information to remember. Students are constantly having information thrown at their face so they can take that big test and as soon as that test is over with the information gets thrown out of the window instead of learning it. Day after day, they are being told to memorize a book or a PowerPoint instead of learning what the material is. Although some classes do use paper and project approaches, most classes do not.…

The Tuesday before my recital, I had my second to last lesson with my teacher, Fred Scerbo, before the recital on Sunday. I was preparing a piece by Charlie Parker named "Anthropology". Despite its difficulty, I felt that I would be able to perform it well.…

It is 8:30 in the morning. The Johnson County Community College student groggily wakes up after her nap under the white, squared umbrella type rectangular cloths that blocks the fluorescent lights directly above her in one of the velvety chairs of the couch like seating structure striped with the cozy colors of autumn-- maple red, pumpkin orange, fading green. She has used her backpack as a pillow, propped up on the wood laminate table that attaches the chairs of the seating structure. She sits up and looks around seeing almost no students on the row of computers against the wall to the left of her. The Billington Library is nearly silent this early aside from the hum and clicks of computers, the occasional printer making a hushing noise as…
