Why People Learn How To Brush Their Teeth Before They Go To School

Whenever people talk about education, the first thing that it brings to their minds is the word “school”. In most people’s opinions, receiving education is when they go to school. What is more, according to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of the word “education” is “The process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university”. However, is the school or the university the only place we can actually be educated? Let’s imagine a day of a girl’s life. Starting from the morning, she wakes up and brushes her teeth, and wait a second, does she learn how to brush her teeth in school? I believe that most people learn how to brush their teeth before they go to school. Let’s continue the story; after breakfast, she goes to the Aquarium to study about different kinds of aquatic animal with her classmates in the biology class. The reason why people do not realize that they are educated in those places is because, in their opinions, “education” stands for the academic studies which they can only receive from formal institutions. Nevertheless, people also acquire knowledge or skills while they are not in school. Those kinds of learning are not considered as “education” by people since those knowledge or skills are not graded and unable to transfer credits for graduation. But, those knowledge and skills are part of the academic education. Without knowing how to dress our clothes, we are not able to go to school; without doing the chemistry laboratories or going to field trips, we cannot understand the content in our textbook thoroughly.
