Educating Rita: How the Film Expounds the Play
Overview
Often, people find films to be more effective in terms of the understanding of a work of art. The film “Educating Rita” is no exception. People tend to receive a film and understand it better because a film is presented in a manner that is more appealing to the eye and the mind than most texts. A film in particular is able to bring out more details and background information touching on the characters than a text. On reading the text “Educating Rita” and viewing the film that goes by the same title, the film gave me more clarity and background about the characters. The movie also was able to communicate better, the mood, by the addition of music to the scenes. This gave me the ability to experience the drama deeply rather than just to read and understand it. The music that was playing as Denny was burning the books, highlighted and intensified the feeling of pain, disappointment and sadness that Denny was going through. It’s impossible for that level of feelings in the climax of the play to be communicated. In the play, the viewer is not able to effectively capture that pain and as a result, one is not able to factor in or understand why Denny does that (Russell 28). In the film, the viewer feels sorry for Denny because the sadness and the disappointment he has in is almost a pink slip to do something wrong and be forgiven of it.
In the play, Denny comes out as a monster that is out to ruin Rita. By having the music in this scene, the emotions that are invoked are enough to cover up and hide that aspect of Denny. The music is absent from the text and this robs it of a vital element in the building up of emotions. In the play, even a stage direction that explains that music is playing in the background would not been sufficient to create the kind of mood that the film brings to this

Before beginning a lesson, a teacher must take into account the comprehension levels and learning styles of students, as well as the amount of time he or she has to cover the material. When it comes to literature units, such as the drama A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, there are often movies to go along with the readings; in this case, the book was made into a movie, directed by Kenny Leon. Teachers must decide whether showing the movie will enhance or impede a student’s understanding of the play. In both the book and movie versions of A Raisin in the Sun, an impoverished African American family is living in Southside Chicago in the 1950’s.…

As a person who has only attened two other plays in their life, people might call me “unqualified” to review a play; these people are wrong. My qualifications for play review come solely from an “excess” amount of musicals listened to, pirated videos, and animatics watched on youtube. Seeing Guys and Dolls live was a great experience as a whole, and I enjoyed myself throughly. Understandably there were a few things that I disagreed with, so I will nitpick and pretend that my qualifications alone make me justified to critique a play that no doubt took alot of effort, stress, and love to make.…
