Educ4702 Reflection

Improved Essays
Early in the semester, I created a goal for myself regarding teaching English. My goal was to create a collection of resources that I can use in the future to support students who struggle with reading by the end of the semester. The various assessment I have completed as part of EDUC4702 has allowed me to further my understanding of struggling readers and help me begin to meet my goal. Research that I have undertaken has also helped me determine high quality resources to include in my portfolio. My portfolio of resources comes in the form of a blog (available at https://portfolioeduc4702.wordpress.com/), which I have used to help me record and organise resources I find that could be used to support struggling readers. Although it is not taught directly, phonological and phonemic knowledge continues to be applied in the later year levels. As these are skills that are crucial to decoding words and reading (Flint et al, 2017), I determined it was important to include these in my portfolio. I have tried to select resources and activities relating to phonological awareness that students can use on their own or in small groups as early finisher activities or as part of a lesson to support students across a range of year levels. Students of all ages may struggle with reading due to difficulties cracking the code (Latham, 2014). One resource I have categorised as phonological awareness is Reading Eggs. This app can be particularly valuable for students who are beginning to read, but it can still be used across a wide range of ability levels. Students have their own individual profiles that they can access at school and at home, and move through the levels at their own pace. The beginning levels start with identifying sounds and letters, and get more complex in later levels. Reading eggs can be used in the classroom as part of reading rotations, or as an early finisher activity (depending on the school resources). As the app becomes more complex as students move past levels, it can also be linked to other curriculum areas, including the interpreting, analysing and evaluating

Two examples of other informal reading assessments are the Phonics Mastery Survey and Phonemic Awareness Assessments. The Phonics Mastery Survey is an informal tool for assessing various phonics elements. This assessment measures a student’s ability to recognize consonant sounds, rhyming words, consonant digraphs, long vowel sounds, words with CVC patterns, consonant blends, variant vowel sounds, and syllables in words (DeVries 2011 p.112). A student’s ability to use knowledge of sound/letter correspondences to decode words, determines his or her ability to read individual words. Knowing the skills that the students possess will assist the teacher in selecting reading tasks that offer the most effective reinforcement of those phonics skills.…

The traditional method for intervention puts students with a specific language at a disadvantage by identifying SLD students later. RTI enables teacher’s through consistent progress monitoring to identify SLD students early to receive more intensive interventions. RTI also brings together the general education teacher and the special education together to create effective and efficient interventions. The traditional model required the special education teacher and general education teacher to work independently. The traditional model had larger more crowded classrooms whereas, RTI has smaller class sizes that focus on more individualized instruction.…

During the first half of the semester for ENC 1102, I believe that my writing skills have improved from ENC 1101; some of which are getting to page length, correctly citing a source, and incorporating how a quote is related to my argument. I still have some errors within my writing that I have not quite figured out how to tackle. Some concepts that I have not gotten down to a tee must be coming up with a thesis statement, basic grammar errors, introducing quotations, and repetition. I have also learned how to distinguish the difference between a personal essay and an argumentative essay with first hand on the two types and how why my grade differed from essay one and two.…

Useful instructional interventions that Mrs. Green could utilize to help Juan develop phonological awareness skills would concentrate on sentence segmentation, rhymes, syllables, and phonemes. Giving students’ counters to use in order to determine how many words are in a sentence is useful in helping ELLs learn sentence segmentation. Using a variety of rhyming activities helps to teach ELLs the concept of minimal pairs and help them distinguish sounds such as /b/ and /v/ from each other. ELLs can learn syllables by clapping the part of a word.…

Within my final portfolio are four essays that I have completed throughout composition 1 during the fall semester of 2015 at Collin College. These four essays include a literacy narrative, an article analysis essay, followed by an essay reporting information, and a position arguing essay. All four of these essays were written with one collective purpose. That purpose was to express my personal views on topics while constantly keeping the readers in consideration. While writing my literacy narrative, “Words for Hearing” my purpose was to formulate an essay and present the readers with a narrative that effectively presented my own experiences with both reading and writing.…

After finishing reading the syllabus, I have a better understanding of EN101. I now know what is expected of us as students, and what we expect from you the teacher. It is a very good idea to not let our parents have any effect on a grade, paper, or assignment, because it makes us as students responsible for our own grades. Having strict deadlines also help all of us be more responsible. With this class, I cannot wait to become a more fluent writer and improve my grammatical skills to help in college.…
