Edna the maid is a vital character within the play "An Inspector Calls" that emphasises both the Birling's superiority and capitalism within the town of Brumly. "Yes Ma'am" and "Please Sir" highlight to the audience that Edna is of a lower class than the Birling's which illustrates her lowly status and at the same time the Birling's superiority. Edna has been incorporated into the play to illuminate to the audience of the Birling's capitalist actions and as a symbol of their wealth. Priestley has given Edna little dialogue to highlight to the audience that she is of a lower class and she is used within the play to make it clear to the audience how the upper class treat the lower class. This can be seen as ironic, as the Birling family seem

The Inspector shows his view to Mr Birling’s little speech at the end when he gives his final speech, before he leaves, where he says, ‘We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.’…
