As Martin Luther King Jr. once proclaimed, “The old law of ‘an eye for an eye’ leaves everybody blind”. Edmond Danes spent over a decade in prison, all because of men’s lies. The decision whether to wrong those who wronged him now looms in Dante’s mind now that he has escaped prison. In Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, satisfaction will not come to Edmond after he gets revenge because of his deep moral values that are instilled in his heart. Despite being thrown in prison while innocent, Edmond was still able to maintain his strong morals of kindness and loyalty during the long 14 years. When he started getting to know fellow prisoner Abbe Faria, he interacted in the same way he would have before prison, being kind and thoughtful. …show more content…
There is a chance that Edmond may gain satisfaction, but it will only be temporary. According the article “Revenge: Will You Feel Better” by Karyn Hall, “When people do get revenge, they can no longer trivialize the situation. Instead, they go over and over it and feel worse.” Although inflicting pain may feel good at first, eventually it will sink in what was done, and the satisfaction will be gone. Along with this, Edmond will not be able to gain any satisfaction due to his unwavering love for Mercedes. By hurting either Fernand or Albert, Edmond will be also causing pain to Mercedes. Through these years, he has never lost his love for her, and hurting her will cause even more damage to himself. Even though temporary happiness may come from revenge, in the end it will cause more pain than satisfaction. In the novel Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond has been faced with the important decision whether or not to seek vengeance. If he chooses to seek his revenge, he will ultimately not gain any satisfaction from this decision. Because of his strong morals that have stuck with him, including kindness and loyalty, inflicting pain on those he used to care about will lead him to be causing pain on himself. In the end, Edmond will realize that revenge has the potential to hurt everyone
