Edge of a Wood
A Pair of Shoes

“This is the road according to the map,” said Margaret.
“I remember coming this way when I went to the timeshare presentation,” said Doreen.
“Oh yes, you never did tell us how you got on there,” said Karen.
“She told me,” said Margaret, realising that her tone may have been a little harsh so she continued with a smile, “I don’t think Doreen wants to talk about it.”
“You’re right there, I definitely just want to forget all about that one.”
“Can you at least tell me if you got the camcorder?” said Karen.
“Bugger off, you.” Said Doreen, “Now where do you think we should start looking?”
“I think we should walk up along this road as far as we can until we’re level with the woods.”
“And what then?” asked Doreen.

Come on Doreen, you know she always buys two pairs in different sizes. Size 5 and size 6, that way she said she’d always have a properly fitting pair of shoes.”
“Oh God, I remember now,” said Doreen, sinking to the same level as Margaret as though she’d taken a blow to the stomach. They’d actually found something, some real evidence.
“I knew I wasn’t imagining it,” wept Margaret, in Doreen’s arms. Karen felt awkward. She felt that she should be the one comforting her mother, but didn’t know that it would necessarily be welcomed. She would leave it to Doreen; she seemed to be doing a good enough job.
“We need to keep looking,” said Margaret, composing herself, her voice sounded numb but determined. “There has to be something else that will lead us to her.” She turned to Monsieur Vert who looked pale with shock.
“What’s further that was? You know, the place where you found the shoes.”
“There’s just a bit of fencing at the end before it goes off over a field towards the woodland.”
“Can we have a

Believe me, I want to find her just as much as anybody else, I just want to do it properly.”
“”We are doing it properly,” said Margaret, “We going to have to climb over this fence so we can check the field before we check the wood.”
“But the wood is so big,” said Doreen.
“We’ll just assume June went in a straight line for now. She definitely went this way, we’ve found her shoes and part of her skirt. It isn’t like her to go hurdling over barbed wire fences; she must have been running from something or someone.”
Karen had already climbed over the fence and offered her hand to Margaret. Once the three of them were over, they began to search the field for clues. There was a pathway that had been recently made; the crop was squashed over sideways. Margaret couldn’t help but feel they were walking up the same path June had been dragged down.”
They walked for a short while until Margaret’s mobile began to ring. It was Officer Drew.
“I’ve just spoken to the owner of the hotel, Monsieur Vert, and he’s informed me that you’re out looking for June, he said something about finding her shoes. I need to know exactly where you are, where you’ve been and whether you’ve found or move anything that could be
