Edgar Lee Masters was a famous American poet/lawyer. His works were part of the new writing movement known as the Modernist. His most popular work, Spoon River Anthology, gained a lot of support as well as criticism from the general public and other writers. His new and untraditional way of writing caused more conservatives to become angered by his writing do to the scandalous ideas. Masters is a major American writer that left a lasting impact on literature.
Edgar Lee Masters was born on August 23rd, 1868 in Garnett, Kansas (Primeau). He was the son of a lawyer father, Hardin W. Masters, and a librarian mother, Emma Dexter Masters. His family …show more content…
In 1898, he married Helen Jenkins with whom he had three children. From 1898 to 1910, Masters published plays and Populists papers under the pseudonym Dexter Wallace. In 1914, he began writing poems about his experiences in Illinois. This was the beginning of Spoon River Anthology, which was one of his well-known works in American literature. The collection of poems was written under the pseudonym Webster Ford. The poems were said to be epitaphs from deceased members from Spoon River. It was set in a fictional town with fictional names, but the stories told the truth about Midwestern life and showed that it wasn’t as perfect as some conservatives wanted the world to see. The poem was told in a free verse style and expressed the views of the Modernist movement. Masters wrote many more collections of poems in this time but Spoon River Anthology was his most famous. This collection of poems left us with many popular quotes that people say today including “It takes life to love life.” In the years following Spoon River, he struggled trying to balance two careers and ended up leaving his career in law. Edgar Lee Masters is no exception to that debate. Brooke believed that Masters should be considered a major American author. She said that Masters may have had a dark, scandalous way of writing and portraying the Midwest, but that could have been and was most likely how life was like in that area. She didn’t know why people disliked the more “dark and vulgar themes in his poetry, because he was writing about real life. The real world is a dark and vulgar place, and that’s what Masters was trying to show when he wrote The Spoon River Anthology. He was trying to show society that the Midwest life wasn’t perfect, but dark and scandalous. She believes that this is why he is a major American writer. Katherine also believes that Edgar Lee Masters should be considered a major American writer. He had considerable success in his book Spoon River Anthology and even though some people think it’s scandalous, it was one of his most famous works in American literature. Before he died, he also received many literary awards. Edgar Lee Masters had many successes in his career as a writer, therefore Katherine believes he should be considered a major American writer too. Edgar Lee Masters is an American writer/poet. He spent his life working as a lawyer, as well as writing unique styles of literature. His most famous work was, Spoon River Anthology, told the truth about the Midwest life.
