Edgar Allen Poe's Poetry

The most common way a person or Author expresses their feelings is throughout a poem. People or Authors can write poems and express multiple points in order to create an image for the reader. Love being the most popular. I personally believe writing a poem to a person can create a bigger impact on the reader than a general poem. The book “Annabel Lee” was the last complete poem composed by Edgar Allen Poe. Like many of Poe's poems, it relates to the theme of the death of a beautiful woman. All the women in Poe's life died young, including his mother, sister, and wife. After their deaths, devastated, Poe continued to abuse alcohol and drugs until his death in 1849. I believe this poem was solemnly based upon a long lost love.

The love is so ideal that the angels killed her out of “jealousy.” Poe uses alliteration and consonance to bring out the contrast between his love and her death. He mentions, "the demons down under the sea can never dissever my soul from the soul of the beautiful Annabel Lee." While maintaining his original theme that physical death holds no domination over their love. However, there is also a cynical tone used in the middle of the poem. It was when he mentioned the angels were jealous of the love they had, So those angels took Annabel from him and sent her away to heaven as he portrays, this represents a despair in his …show more content…
When he says things such as, “In a kingdom by the sea” i imagine him talking about these huge pillars of stone and a huge beach below washing onto the shore making crash noises. Most of his diction in the literature showed how angry the the writer felt as a result of the angels taking his love. As the conflict of the poem goes on, it knocked the writer down because he really loved the woman. The tone changes from cynical into a sudden tone that provokes a sorrow and gloomy feel. You can tell he is not over his love because he still enjoys to think about their relationship before death did them

By personifying death, he was comparing it to God. “Death looks gigantically down” (Poe, “The City in the Sea”). Unlike the poems “Annabel Lee” and “Eldorado” death has a strong presence in this poem. Although the words death or dying are not mentioned in “Eldorado,” it is still a theme of the poem.…

In today’s world, the genre of romance has a very different connotation than it did over 150 years ago. Nowadays, romance novels are typically about two people falling in love and living happily-ever-after. However, in the beginning to mid 1800’s, the idea of Romance didn’t have much to do with relationships. The era of Romanticism was one that was marked by a strong contrast against the ideals of the more scientific Enlightenment that had occurred some years previously. It is in this period that many famous writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and many more first made their presence known as serious American authors.…

The narrator in the story serves as a character who didn’t appreciate his life to a large degree that caused him to begin thinking negative thoughts and later, transitioning to the physical aspect of death. “It was open- wide open- […] I saw it with perfect distinctness- all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bones […].” (Page 405) Coherently, Poe personified death several times, each, giving the audience a feeling of being in a “dark place” “[…] [T]he hellish tattoo of the heart increased.…

The song then states that the woman had no fear as she ran to him and as promised she flew away with him. The only logical assumption is that the woman was so distraught from the death of her lover that she killed herself to be with him. The woman, much like Juliet did with Romeo had that faith that she would be with him in the afterlife. So this song deals heavily with the thought of an afterlife and the message of this song is that when you die, you’ll be with loved ones again so you should not fear death. The last poem does not glorify death, it has a real outlook on…

This poem was deep, and had a lot of emotion. You could tell that the writer had been really hurt and maybe had even been taken advantage of. She had a dark and weary tone, which meant that this was an emotional piece to write and it had a big impact on her life, or someone else’s life. She had a rhythm that flowed nicely, and for the most part the syllables in each stanza matched every time, (which I particularly like).…

Edgar Allan Poe grew up having a life which would have been hard for anyone to deal with, yet he did it and managed to benefit from his hardships by writing about his misfortunes. From a young age, Poe felt abandoned and lost, which resulted in his turning to writing as a lifestyle rather than just a hobby or a passion. His hard life resulted in Poe writing in the gothic style, with much emphasis on the darker side of human nature and the dark, twisted parts of the world. Edgar Allan Poe fosters a sense of dread which is synthesized with repetition such as that found in “The Raven” as well as the intense diction found in “The Premature Burial” in order to convey the idea that fear deteriorates a person’s mental sanity as time goes on.…

In the poem, “Annabel Lee” by Edger Alan Poe he introduces to the reader to a man who lost his love years ago. The speaker is remembering his love from years ago when they were together “in a kingdom by the sea” (1). Although they were only children, their love was so strong that even the angels in heaven and the demons from the underground were jealous of what they had. The speaker strongly believes that because of their jealousy the angels brought a strong wind from the heavens that killed Anabel Lee. Her body was then thrown inside a tomb by her family.…

On Oct. 7, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe died mysteriously. While many speculate about his untimely death, my belief is that he was suffering from a fever borne from some kind of illness, most likely cholera, and died as a result. The most believable evidence comes from Poe himself, in a letter to his mother-in-law, Maria Clemm, Poe told Maria that he had contracted cholera weeks before he arrived in Richmond and had a manic episode. In addition, Elmira Royster Shelton, Poe’s fiancee, wrote to Maria that on September 26, Poe had a fever and was pale before he left Richmond for Baltimore. Finally, in another letter to Maria by Poe’s attending physician, he states that Poe arrived unconscious and was like that until early morning where he woke up in…

He dug himself out of his depression with the help of his wife, but unfortunately spiraled back down after her sudden death. To illustrate the darkness of his works, he is known as the Father of Poetic Horror, though the title is not needed, because his works are a true testament to that. He uses repetition and rhythm to state a point, while showing true emotion in his work. He uses rhyme in many of his works to show his feelings and positions on the topics he speaks about. Lastly he uses dark Irony, sometimes to antagonize people in his poems, and sometimes, to show his hatred and ill will towards characters, who in his mind transition into the real world.…
