Edgar Allen Poe was born in Massachusetts on January 19th 1809. Both of his parents were professional actors. His father left him when he was only two years old, leaving his mother to take care of him and his brother and sister. At the age of three he became an orphan when his mother got contact with tuberculosis, making him split from his brother and sister. Poe was handed to the Allen family (“Poe’s Life” 2014). Poe relationship with his foster father was bleak. In 1824 he had written his first poem "Last night, with many cares & toils oppressed, / Weary, I laid me on a couch to rest ("Edgar Allan Poe."2016)." At age of 17, he had enrolled into the University of Virginia where he excelled in his courses. In order to pay for tuition Poe did gambling since his foster father only gave him a third of the tuition money.

Poe describes the Raven as someone or something that loses its beauty and has a hard time regaining it. In the book he unites his aesthetic ideals and philosophical.
