Did you know Edgar Allen Poe married his first cousin? Poe lied to the court about his wife’s age. She was thirteen and Poe was twenty-six. Later in life, she died of tuberculosis, like most women in Poe’s family. Back to Poe is passing. My thoughts on Poe’s death is that he died of rabies. Doctors even said he was not drunk when he was found.
Poe’s symptoms were similar to signs of rabies. “Poe was found outside of a tavern, but wasn’t drunk.” (pg. 187 by Dr. R. Michael Benitez) This makes me think that he did pass of rabies because every sign was d¬¬¬¬irected to the deadly disease. Shortly after Poe was found, he was taken to the hospital. While in the hospital, Poe started to hallucinate and became very disordered. “Poe had all features of encephalitic rabies.” (pg. 187 by Dr. Henry Wilde) While in the hospital, Poe gained as fear of water, also known as hydrophobia. Hydrophobia is a fear of water and is a known sign of rabies.

“Indicates that over the past twenty years in the U.S there have been thirty-three cases of human rabies, yet only twenty-four present of these victims recall exposure to the animal” (pg.190 by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Only twenty-four remember having physical contact with the rabid animal. “The incubation period in humans may be as a yearlong” (pg.190 by New York Times) Poe may have been infected over a year ago and would have never thought twice about it. “There was no available vaccine for pets during this time” (New York Times) So many pets could have been infected with rabies.
