Edgar Allen Poe was an extremely significant person in American Literature. Poe was, and still is one of the most famous horror writers in history and will be remembered for his dark stories, and poems. He greatly influenced America with his mysterious and miserable ways. Even though that Poe was an extremely important and significant person in American Literature he struggled through life. He had many different mental problems that were caused by some of the tragedies that happened in his short life.

In 1834 John Allen passed away leaving Poe out of the will. Poe was struggling to find his place in the literary world only getting money from short stories that he was writing. He won a cash prize for writing a short story in the Baltimore Sunday Visitor. He also became the assistant editor of the Southern Literary Messenger. That new job gave him secured level of ease. He was getting paid for and was being taken care of by his aunt. On May 16, 1836 the twenty-seven year old Poe married his thirteen year old cousin. Accounts say that even though there was a drastic age difference they were a happy couple despite their poverty. David Lawrence says that “His grand attempt and achievement was with his wife; his cousin, a girl with a singing voice(Bloom, 22)” It is believed that Poe married Virginia so that he would be taken care of by his aunt Maria Clemm and have somewhere to stay, and somewhere to eat. He was hired as the editor of Grahams Literary Magazine with the salary of $800 per year. His writing was going extremely well. In this time he wrote a wide variety of short stories and poems. “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Mask of the Red Death,” and “A Decent into the Maelström” were all written during this time in Poes life. Poe, Maria Clemm, and Virginia moved to Philadelphia where he had controlled his drinking (Bloom 1999, 13).
In 1842 while singing in the choir at church Virginia had burst a blood vessel and she was hanging on the verge of death. After the blood vessel burst she entered a terrible spiral of recovery and illness. Poe was devastated, and began to drink again. During this time he wrote some of the best work, some of the work that would be remembered for years afterward. “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Gold-Bug.” In 1844 Virginia got well enough that they moved to New York (Bloom 1999, 14).
