Edgar Allen Poe was viewed as a psychotic person most of his life because of his deep descriptions of the events in his horror stories and poems. Throughout Poe’s life, he faced many hardships; nothing seemed to ever go his way. He lived in poverty for most of his early life. After some of his poems started attracting attention from the public, his financial circumstances got reasonably better. Shortly after his subtle fame, he met a woman named Virginia Clemn. The two fell madly in love, though this time of love and prosperity only lasted ten short years due to her sudden and tragic death of Virginia. Grief-stricken by the death of his beloved wife, Poe’s health and financial state started a sudden decline. Just two short years later, Poe died a mysterious death. People of his time viewed him as insane; when in reality he was a misunderstood genius, overcoming all of the struggles in his life. Poe would later be credited as the father of symbolism, and with being one of the most influential writers of all time. Being the father of symbolism he showed his mastery of this skill in his final work “Annabelle Lee”. Poe uses the following literary techniques: symbolism, Structure, and imagery to develop the complex meaning of the poem. The rhyme scheme of the poem is different in every stanza of the poem. The effect of this structure is it make the poem linger on in the reader's mind. The poem also uses internal rhyme like,” beams and dreams, chilling and killing, and rise and eyes.” The long “e” internal rhyme scheme give the poem a sedative effect. Through the duration of the poem the phrases,” Annabelle Lee, kingdom by the sea, my darling, and love.” are repeated.
