It was in December, so it was very cold. He had a fire going, and he watched the ashes fade. He was excited for tomorrow, he was to read another book. That book was full of sorrow, just like he was at the loss of his love, Lenore.
The man saw his purple curtains moving, and it thrilled him because he did not know the cause of this. He took it to be the visitor at the door.
He decided to not keep the visitor waiting and got up, ready to open the door. He apologizes for being so slow at opening the door, but when he opens it there is nothing.

He looks from where the sound came, and it is a raven. The raven perched itself upon a bust above his door.
The bird made the man happy. The bird was magnificently stern. The man starts talking to the bird, the bird responds,” Nevermore.”
He is in awe of the bird’s response, no matter how vague it was. He thought of how fortuitous this event was.
The raven sat still upon the bust. He spoke only one word,” Nevermore.” The man then grimly thought,” He will leave me, just as my friends before he have.” The bird replies,” Nevermore.”
He was startled by the thought broken by the word of the raven. The man talked,” Oh how pitiful the bird is, to be caught by such a pitiful master.” He thought of his pity and why it is so.
The man smiled, still. He pulled a chair to him, and sat in front of the bird. He thought of how haunting this bird was, and then its croaking,” Nevermore.”
He sat back reclining, wondering why the bird was here.
The man was angry as he came to the thought that God had sent this bird. He yelled at the bird. He yelled at the Devil for taking his Lenore. The bird responded,” Nevermore.”
He called the bird a prophet, a sign of evil. He asked the bird questions hoping for a response. All he got was,”
