Edgar Allan Poe was born on Jan 19, 1809, and in Boston, Massachusetts. His father left him at an early age, and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was only three years old. His adoptive father and mother treated him well enough as a child. His mother showered him with affection, and his father taught him many manners and customs. As he grew older, his father grew distant, and he disliked him more and more. He refused to help Poe financially, and didn't tell him when his mother passed away from none other than tuberculosis. After an extensive military career, serving under an alias for being too young, he married his thirteen year old cousin, Virginia Clemm.
