Poe’s influence on poetry and literature is evident even in other contemporary popular works of fiction such as A Study in Scarlet, the first Sherlock Holmes story, in which the famous detective Sherlock Holmes mentions Poe by name while comparing his methods of deductive reasoning to Poe’s own detective, Dupin, to his partner John Watson:

Poe was an athletic sort, and participated in boxing swimming, and more. He also displayed an aptitude for the English language, and started seriously writing poetry. Poe had gained an attitude against his father around this time, possibly due to his foster father’s emotional detachment to Poe.
In the year 1826, Edgar left Richmond to go to the University of Virginia. Though Poe was a great student of Latin and French, he gained a substantial amount of debt, and the money that his foster father John had supplied him with was only a fraction of what was necessary. Poe began to gamble in order to acquire money to pay for his college tuition and at one point, Edgar became so penurious that he had to burn his own furniture to keep himself warm. Eventually, Poe got engaged to a woman named Elmira Royster. Elmira's father didn't want Poe and his daughter to be together, so he intercepted messages that he had sent to her. When Poe finally returned from college, he found that Elmira had become engaged to a different man while Edgar was away. This devastated Poe, and he became increasingly angry with John Allan.
