Each room was color coordinated giving the reader significant stages of the human life. In the short novel “The Masque of the Red Death” Poe vividly says “To the right and left, in the middle of each wall, a tall and narrow Gothic window looked out upon a closed corridor which pursued the windings of the suite” (432). Poe pretentiously distinguishes the direction between east to be the birth of a human life and the west wing confining to be death. The catastrophic phantom, wearing the mask, hovered his way through each room until he stopped in the seventh black and red room directed in the deathly west wing. As Prince Prospero enjoys the company of his thousands of friends at his masquerade ball, a masked figure appeared out of thin air. The masked figure intriguing appearance mentally shook Prospero into fear. Poe distinctly says “When the eyes of Prince Prospero fell upon this spectral image… he was seen to be convulsed, in the first moment with a strong shudder either of terror” (433). Prince Prospero grew into insanity and immediately wanted to terminate the unwelcome stranger. The corpse like figure instantaneously passed through each staged room until it reached to the seventh black room. Milne states “When the figure reaches the seventh room, it turns to face the Prince, who falls instantly to his death” (no page). As the mortified friends undoubtedly went to rescue Prince Prospero they soon realized that the masked figure was unveiled to be the “Red Death” and they died all at once. The “Red Death” gave no mercy even to the wealthiest of human beings. In conclusion, Poe’s theory in the short novel “The Masque of the Red Death” gave value to the defining of death. Therefore, seven rooms, Prince Prospero, and the masked figure speculated to be the sign of no escape of death. Therefore, the spectrum of the seven rooms provisioned the stages of the human life.
