He was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts and died on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. Poe wrote many short stories and poems that had a bleak nature to them. Edgar Allan Poe’s life was filled with tragedy, his poems and short storied were highly successful, and his tragic life influenced his literary works. Edgar Allan Poe was born to Elizabeth “Eliza” Hopkins Poe and David Poe Jr. He was the middle child with an older brother, Henry, and a younger sister, Rosalie. David left them when Rosalie was only an infant and Eliza died when Edgar was three. Consequently, the siblings were separated into three different households. In Annabel Lee Poe conveyed a sense of sadness and loss because his beloved Anabel was killed by the wind which was said to be caused by the envious angels. Ominously, in The Raven the narrator kept hearing a nocking at his door in the middle of the night but when he would check it nothing would be there. Then in The Tell Tale Heart the narrator was terrified of the old man’s “vulture eye” which made him kill the man and decapitate his body and stuff him under the floorboards. In The Fall of the House of Usher a man went to visit an old friend who lived with his sister in a run-down mansion, but when he gets there he realizes that the house isn’t the only thing that is falling apart. These reoccurring themes point to the tragedy that took place in Poe’s life such as his alcohol addiction and the deaths of his loved ones.
