When this guy, Poe, is introduced into your English Literature class, most kids are thinking, what book do we have to read now? For most of my time in middle school, English was the boring class. The class no one wanted to show up to. The class you wished you didn’t have to take. Well, in my high school English classes, Edgar Allan Poe changed my opinion on this stupid subject. Since the days of my grandparents, teenage guys all want to do these three things, watch TV or other media, eat food, and get girls. Did you know Poe’s works have the same components? When I read The Tell-Tale Heart, a short story, I was blown away with how graphic and intense the story was. It felt like I was watching a TV show in my living room. For an author to interest me in my English classes, I had to look him up. Poe didn’t have an ordinary life back in the 1800’s. Edgar Allan Poe had a unique life, and out of miserable circumstances became the most renowned writer of Dark Romanticism. Even though his works are about two hundred years old, we should continue to read Poe today. The many tragedies Poe faced in his early life influenced him as a writer later in life. He was born on January 19th, 1809 to his biological parents, Elizabeth and David, in Boston. His parents were traveling actors, however, they were dirt poor. Edgar had an older brother named Henry. He literally started from the bottom and worked his way up to future greatness. Even if his stories are not everyone’s cup of tea, you have to recognize him as one of the best at his craft. He is one of the best American writers in all of history with his Dark Romanticism themed stories. He applied what he was going through in his personal life into the works he successfully wrote. This is why we should continue to read Poe in our schools right beside the names of Fitzgerald, Lee, Hawthorne, Hemingway, Twain, and Shakespeare. Wherever you are in life, we should use the gifts we are blessed with just like Poe did. Maybe the world would be a better place because of
