Life can be cruel or it can be full of joyful and beautiful moments. Unfortunately in the case of Edgar Allan Poe it generally consisted of cruel and devastating moments. “Alone” by Edgar Allan Poe was a poem where he expresses the effects the tragic and devastating loss of his mother and the departure of his father.Throughout the poem he demonstrates outcome of these losses and how they contributed to his different view of the world that he developed later on. Poe uses symbolism, imagery and personification to develop the theme of trauma. For instance, Poe uses symbolism to create a different view between the him and the rest of the world. For example, "From my childhood's hour I have not been / As others were" (line 1). Due to the loss …show more content…
When he states, “From the lightning in the sky/As it passed me flying by,”(18-17). He is illustrating a dark and cloudy day with constant lightning bolts passing by his side. This quote is an example of personification because he describes the lightning bolts to be “flying by” and logically a lightning can not be a passenger of a plane and fly by because those require human characteristics. But Poe knows this and decides to uses it as a form of personification so the reader can create imagery and have a better understanding of the poem and guide then toward the theme. Similarly, at the end of the poem Poe uses personification again to construct imagery. The author is describing his view of the sky and says , “And the cloud that took the form/Of a demon in my view.”(20-22). He is illustrating the clouds in the dark sky taking form of a demon. Thi is important because if is successfully leading the reader to create an image in his mind while reading the poem. The image created is full of evil and darkness and since he intends it to be his view of the sky he is implying that he has a dark and evil view of the world while he describes the view of others as “Heaven” and “blue” which is a positive view. As a result he uses personification to create imagery and enable the reader to develop the theme of trauma because Poe seems to be traumatized and thats causes him to have a negative and evil view

Though dark, the narrator’s thoughts can be deemed realistic, and comparable to a sociopath’s thoughts. Poe also uses second person narrative, which draws the reader in and creates a sense of intrigue and mystery. In the last stanza, the stars and the moon are compared to messengers. Poe uses personification such as “The wind came out of the cloud by night, chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.” in the fourth stanza. Logically, the wind, which is an object, cannot kill a person and so this is an example of personification. Another example of personification can be found in the first line of the last stanza “For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams” the moon cannot possibly bring someone dreams as it is an inanimate object.…
