Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Pit and The Pendulum” conveys the dark romantic convention of isolation. The writers during the dark romantic time period especially liked to use isolation to enhance the fear of the character and thus the readers fear for what is to come as the story progresses. In this scene it shows that the narrator, main character, is isolated from the rest of humanity, “The agony of suspense grew at length intolerable, and i cautiously moved forward… I proceeded for many paces; but still all was blackness and vacancy.”(Poe 252-253).
