This early exposure to surfing was said to be a key point to his life-long love for surfing. His father was offered a better job in Oahu when Eddie was around thirteen years old so his family moved there (Jon). Waikiki, in Oahu, was a haven for surfing and Eddie quickly became a “Waikiki surf bum”, surfing every day after school, before school, and even during school if the wave was right (Jon). At the time when his father decided to move the family to Oahu, the North Shore was just being discovered (Jon). Born Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau, makes it seem as if he was born for his life’s journey. The reason this is, is because Makua Hanai means “feeding parent” in Hawaiian (Woodsmall). Eddie nurtured the community that surrorunded him in Hawaii and his love for that was what led him to paddle out into the biggest waves and surf them (Woodsmall). Eddie’s generation lived through a time of Hawaiian history that occurred fewer than twenty years after Hawaii became an American state (Boissoneault). Native Hawaiians felt more determined than ever during this time to reclaim their heritage. Eddie Aikau helped smooth the tensions between binaries at this time and, because of this strong heritage, he made it clear that he wanted to share it with everyone. He wanted everyone to have the same access to sun and surf as he did (Boissoneault). Rather than hide Hawaii from the rest of the world, he wanted to share its natural beauty and teach everyone why it was so necessary to appreciate the native roots you hold (Woodsmall).
