Ed Sheeran's Speech In 'Thinking Out Loud'

Decent Essays
Ed Sheeran is a twenty-four year old British singer and song writer. In recent years his songs have grown in popularity and have even been nominated for Grammy Awards. Sheeran writes and preforms a large mix of genres ranging from rap to acoustic performances. My favorite song is “Thinking out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. It is a musically complex and well written romantic ballad from the album X (Pronounced “Multiply”). The chorus builds up to seven words which are then repeated several times at the conclusion of the song. To emphasize this line, Ed Sheeran leaves a beat between each word as he sings: “we found love right where we are”. Alone these words have their own associations and meanings, but strung together they form one of my favorite quotes …show more content…
However, I think “we” is ideal for this particular quote because it is ambiguous, Therefore, the reminder of the words in this quote can be projected upon anyone the listener it to be applied to. I think Ed Sheeran consciously chose the word “we” rather than proper noun because he wanted his audience to be able to relate to the song. “Found” usually refers to obtaining something that is lost or, in this case, something that has yet to be discovered. I associate “found” with the inevitable search for the person, place, thing or idea that the word is being associated with. I think most people associate “found” with the feeling of relief or excitement. In this quote, Ed Sheeran uses “found” to give emphasis to the inferable search and as a transition to the climax of the entire song. I think “love” is the most important word in the entire song. It is the main theme of the song and the topic that this quote surrounds. “Love” reminds me of warmth, happiness, and hope. Ed Sheeran’s intended associations with the word “love” are uncertain; however, the listener can apply their own meaning and feel a deeper connection to what the singer is …show more content…
Nevertheless, the meaning in this particular case is easily inferred from the surrounding words as a synonym for “exactly”. If you graph out the words based on where the song builds up to the climax, the actual climax, and the decline; “right” is juxtaposed in the same level of the quote as “found”. Interestingly enough, after the word “right” is sung the word “found” changes its underlying meaning to suggest astonishment. I think most people can relate to Ed Sheeran’s experience because they know how it feels to have overlooked something.
“Where” can indicate a question, specific location or emotional place in one’s life. Once again, Ed Sheeran uses a very general word rather than being specific. No matter where you are in the world, “where” can be associated with any location the listener is in regardless of whether that be an arbitrary moment in time or specific place.
“We” is said once again as the quote comes to a conclusion. However, this time “we” is more specific. Contextual clues allow a listener to associate the second “we” with all the words that were previously stated. Therefore, “we” is now supplementary to the characterization of emotional love and it creates a bond between the first person character who is singing and the object of his love. “We” is also almost always a reference to multiple people rather than an object. It is this instance of the word “we” that personifies the object of Sheeran’s

Every day, we hear the term ‘love’ in a plethora of situations. So, what is love? According to Shakespeare, in sonnet 116 - The first quatrain describes love as an unchangeable force in the lines “Love is not love / Which alters when it alteration finds, / Or bends with the remover to remove: / O no! it is an ever-fixed mark.” Shakespeare enforces the fact that true love always perseveres, no matter what it’s up against by using the metaphor, “That looks on tempests and is never shaken” in the second quatrain.…

Dime- Store Lips Singer songwriter Ray LaMontagne sings my favorite and most cherished song. This is a song that I am very close to and one that I have sat down and played more times in a row than I can count. In the song “Empty” Ray LaMontagne sings from his troubled point of view expressing his feelings of sorrow and numbness. “Empty” is a song that speaks for my hindered ability to open up and speak out about the things that go through my mind on a daily basis and the consequences to my silence. Ray LaMontagne has a very bleak and pessimistic point of view of the world due to his empty feelings and he captures the aspect of what it is really like to live with the numbness that comes with my silence.…

The Silent Killer Kid Cudi released the song Pursuit of Happiness on January 25, 2010, which is a part of his album Man on the Moon: The End of the Day. The song made its first television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman on September 12, 2009. Cudi’s album also consists of other popular songs including “Day N Nite”, “Soundtrack 2 My Life”, and “Man on the Moon.” Pursuit of Happiness comes across as a bright, cheerful song that is about living life in happiness, however the much deeper meaning in the lyrics headlines a man that is in a dark place who struggles to obtain contentment. The man masks the bleak truth with components such as alcohol and drugs, but never comes to realize that they will only cover up unhappiness for a small…

The Crow & The Butterfly A musician’s inspiration for a song can come from anywhere, even their own subconscious, and that proves true in the case of my favorite song “The Crow & The Butterfly” by Shinedown. The singer of the band and the writer of the song, Brent Smith, has said his inspiration came from a dream he had about a mother dealing with the death of a child. The song to me represents loss in any sense that is relevant to the listener. The emotion you feel while listening to the lyrics can speak to anyone in different aspects of their life.…
