Though he has only been a household name in the United States for about four years, Ed Sheeran is now one of the most famous song artists internationally. His roots are in England, but Sheeran now travels the world to perform his popular music, which is a mix of pop, rock, and acoustic sounds. Ed Sheeran has brought many great songs into the light with his three major albums, titled after mathematical symbols. All the albums that have been released by Ed Sheeran are phenomenal, but his most recent collection ÷(Divide) is definitely his best album to date. Good music is largely defined by each individual and is rarely accepted across the board. Ed Sheeran, however, is accepted across many genres. “Shape of You,” a number one song on the Hot 100, possesses an African beat and undertone despite the song’s mainstream lyrics. The beat in the beginning of the song, which carries throughout the tune, is African and inspires many to dance or move. “Shape of You” was going to be given to singer Rihanna, as it is more her style of music, but the decision was made that Sheeran should keep the song. In doing so, Ed demonstrated his range of modes and showed off his various styles, seeing as he released this bop alongside the more floating and Sheeran sounding track “Castle on the Hill” (Molanphy). This range of styles is quite possibly what makes this album Sheeran’s best. He shows off the fact that he is not merely a standard pop singer, but he can croon to the hearts of many, or he can provide the song that is blaring in the club that has a multitude of people dancing. One must take into consideration the technically soundness of the work, the ratings that it is receiving, and the feelings it evokes. Sheeran recently provided the wedding song for many couples when he put out “Thinking Out Loud” in 2015. The singer songwriter could have possibly one upped himself with the his new songs “Perfect” and “How Would You Feel.” Both of these tunes are classically Sheeran and make the listener think of that special someone, who may or may not be in their life. Ed balances out these happy lovebird songs with tragic counterparts. The song Sheeran was first known for in the United States was “The A Team,” which tells the story of a girl who was addicted to drugs and resorted to prostitution to get the money she needed. The song introduced Sheeran to the world and was loved because of the melody and musicality of it. Many did not realize the true meaning of it upon the first time listening. Ed Sheeran has a gift for painting sad pictures with pretty words, which causes the listener to feel a sort of melancholy while hearing the tunes. The content is sad, but the words are beautiful, and the ear wants to keep listening to it. His newest saddening song is “Supermarket Flowers.” The song relives the death of his grandmother through Sheeran’s own mother’s eyes.
