“Shape of You,” a number one song on the Hot 100, possesses an African beat and undertone despite the song’s mainstream lyrics. The beat in the beginning of the song, which carries throughout the tune, is African and inspires many to dance or move. “Shape of You” was going to be given to singer Rihanna, as it is more her style of music, but the decision was made that Sheeran should keep the song. In doing so, Ed demonstrated his range of modes and showed off his various styles, seeing as he released this bop alongside the more floating and Sheeran sounding track “Castle on the Hill” (Molanphy).
