Ed Shaw's Views On Homosexual Relationship

Decent Essays
Ed Shaw mentions on page 35 that "I don't think it's helpful for Christians to take it up as a label..... I think it can restrict our openness to the potential of change." I cannot possibly agree any more than what Ed Shaw said on this page because I do believe that the Church needs to think once again of their attitude on approaching and embracing Christians who are struggling with a homosexual relationship. Many churches, especially evangelicals, not only affirm people who struggle with a homosexual relationship but also define their identity as "gay." Thus, while they accept homosexual relationship but they also encourage those who struggle with the issue to live according to their identity. This poses a great problem as all Christians'

In class, the phrase, “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin,” came up and made me think deeper about homosexuals as people rather than as sinners. We discussed that the right thing to do when put in a situation that we may not agree with or believe in, is to love and respect the person/ people regardless because they are still our brothers and sisters in Christ. Whether we agree with a homosexual lifestyle or not, God made us to love one another as he loves us and he made each and everyone one of us in his own image. The author of this book also addressed, in chapters six through eight, the problem of communication and understanding one another. He referred to the communication between Christians…

Current United Methodist theological conversation presents heterosexual as the normative expression of human sexuality, dismissing gay men and lesbians entirely. UM Church policies ignore the presence, voice, and experience of gay persons, sending the message that they do not matter and that their spiritual existence is irrelevant. This circumstance presents an unjust narrative that silences and prohibits individuals from participating fully in creation and contradicts the mission of the Church. Even though United Methodists are theologically divided over issues of human sexuality, Christian leaders cannot in good conscience marginalize gay and lesbian persons for the sake of convention. Current UM Church policies rely on complicated rhetoric…

Homosexuality in the 1960’s wasn’t as open and fortunate as it is today. The same time period where Alison Bechdel and her two brothers being raised in west Pennsylvania in her graphic novel Fun Home, Her father Bruce and self were going through sexuality identification problems at the same time. Although it is not forwardly said but with evidence from the text, Bruce may have committed suicide in result of holding his true identity from the public, his wife Helen and family and covering up his sexual desire for younger men. All a mist of this, Homosexuality was still considered a mental illness and you could be jailed if you’re caught doing homosexual acts. Also the way homosexuals were portrayed made it look like to the rest of the world…

Holden affiliates with two other men who display homosexual tendencies or are described as displaying them, Carl Luce and Mr. Antolini. Salinger purposefully connects the three males through their attraction to older women, which is possibly a means for the men and boy to conceal their true sexual desires. Carl Luce is dating a Chinese woman who is "in her late thirties" (Salinger, 145) while Antolini is married to a woman who was "about sixty years older" (Salinger, 181) than him. Holden himself is attracted to Mrs. Morrow, as seen through his personal observations of the woman. He said, "she was very good looking" (Salinger, 54) and "had quite a lot of sex appeal" (Salinger, 56).…

Rod Dreher begins his argument opposing the view stating that the Christian solidarity means nothing unless they change their views. He goes on to state that Christians should not condemn violence as it is against the Bible. He also states that an advance of L.G.B.T. rights would be a utter loss of religious expression. He finishes with calling the absurdity of the Orlando attack being pinned on Christians as it was not the intention. Julie Rogers makes the strong claim that Christians must bridge the gap between saying that everyone is welcome, and actually making them welcome.…

One of my roommates in college was gay. He confided in me about his sexual preference, knowing I’d respect his confidence. Back then, gay people were openly ridiculed and rejected and attacked. I wish I could say this was no longer true, but obviously I can’t. We’ve come a long way, but what happened in Orlando and the reaction to it provide harsh reminders of how people hate those who are different from them in some way.…

Growing up in a very conservative state such as Utah, I have grown up knowing that there is a very negative connotation with being a part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Homosexuality is an orientation that is accepted in my family; however, not by the religious communities we lived in. I was often exposed to phrases such as, “homosexuality is a choice” and “you can be cured if you suffer from homosexuality” After much analysis the statements, homosexuality is not a choice nor can you be cured. One institution that I received the message “homosexuality is a choice” was from the religious institutions of Utah specifically, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The LDS church states “The experience…

They identify with the base in Maslow's pyramid of needs, and that is the "physiological needs" just like the rest of us. Due to the idea that these sexual orientations are not blended naturally into society, this community has found that it does not identify with the rest of the pyramid. Historically, same sex activity was embraced by the Romans in the public bathrooms that they had. This changed with the insertion of religion where mentality has changed over the issue of sexual orientation. It has become a burden to society, even heterosexual activity was considered a burden if it wasn't consummated after the holy church performs its marriage rituals first.…

Thus, giving them an almost guaranteed pass on judgement day. The bible views homosexuality as “if a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads” (Leviticus 20:13, New International Version). This was taken seriously by both men and women and therefore, gay and lesbian individuals would resist coming out and were stuck fitting into social norms. With that being said, I will begin this timeline in the early 1950’s where the War on Queers began.…

My research showed some very negative comments that many catholics view on same sex relationships and some very disturbing views on it. Many people were referring to same sex marriage as a sin and were considering it “unnatural”. My opinion on the topic is that everyone should have the right to fall is love with whoever they want whether that person is a man or a woman. Pope Francis is changing many catholics perspectives which I believe is a remarkable thing that should have been done a long time ago. I believe that with society changing so should the catholic churches beliefs when it comes to homosexual relationships.…

Na tha kuch to Khuda tha, kuch na hota to Khuda hota Duboya mujh ko hone ne, na hota main to kya hota - Mirza Ghalib Baba Ramdev once emphatically put down his ideas against homosexuality in words, ‘had God been in favour of homosexuality, he would not have created two sexes’. He also equates homosexuality as mental illness, which he proposes to cure through yoga. However, Ramdev is just one among many faces in our society who argue vehemently against homosexuality. These speakers use God, culture, tradition, myths, etcetera, as tools against ‘queer’ practices. Now, the question comes, who can be categorized as ‘queer’?…
