Edward Theodore (Ed) Gein was born on August 27, 1907. He had an odd childhood, to say the least. His father was an alcoholic, and his mother was very religious. It was not a happy marriage but the two stayed together due to their religious beliefs on divorce. Gein and his older brother, Henry, grew up being taught from the bible from their mother. She mainly focused on all of the bad that the bible talked about, rather than both the good and the bad. They lived in La Crosse, Wisconsin for a good while, but then in 1915 his mother moved the family to an isolated farmhouse on the outskirts of Plainfield, Wisconsin to keep her sons from being influenced by outsiders. Augusta, the mother, would teach both Henry and Ed the “evil of drink, and the belief that all women (herself excluded) were prostitutes and whores.” (NA) She would constantly drill bad things like that, and more, into the two young Gein’s heads.

Ed apparently lost his brother, and got together a search party to find him. Ed led the party straight to his brother’s body, which had trauma to his head.
