One thing Ed is amazing at is keeping Christopher calm. Rather than getting mad at Christopher when he does something wrong but does not know, Ed helps him to understand what he is doing is wrong. This is shown through the letters from Judy to Christopher. In the one letter when she is explaining why she left she writes, “I’m not like your father. Your father is a much more patient person” (106). She also writes Christopher was much more different with Ed, more calm (109). Ed makes sure when he is mad, he does not take it out on Christopher and hides it so Christopher can remain calm. One of the reasons Christopher gets mad is because he either does not like what is made for him or the colour of it. To avoid this Ed either asks Christopher what he wants to eat or offers to make something and asks if it is alright. When Ed comes home from work he sees Christopher walking down the stairs and asks Christopher what he wants to eat (96). Another time when Ed asks for Christopher’s opinion on what he is going to eat “Then father said, ‘I’ll stick one of those Gobi Aloo Sag things in the oven for you, OK?’” (67). That way Christopher will not get upset about what is made for him to eat because he is either asked what he wants to eat or his opinion on what Ed is planning on making him. One of the main things that shows Ed understands Christopher is the hand fan. This
