In addition to the differences in metabolic rates there are morphological differences between the two. Being, that endotherms have layers of insulation to retain heat including fat, fur and feathers. Ectotherms would not welcome extra insulation because it could overheat their bodies. Endotherms have mechanisms present in that allow for insulation without overheating. These cooling mechanisms include sweating and panting.
2) What is the liver’s role in digestion? The livers role in digestion is detoxification, creation, regulation, processing and storage. Without this multipurpose organ digestion of carbohydrates, fats and protein would not yield as much energy for body function. Also many common foods would be so toxins that would cause death or serious damage if consumed. The livers first role is producing enzymes to counter toxic compounds consumed in the diet. An example of its detoxification role is with alcohol, which is a stable in many diets. Wine at dinner is only possible due to the liver producing an enzyme aptly named alcohol dehydrogenase. This enzyme has the wonderful ability to safely transform toxic ethanol into a safe acetyl radicals and hydrogen atoms that don’t harm the body. Alcohol is not the only …show more content…
These insulating properties arise from water having a high boiling point. Therefore allowing the trapping of enough heat to maintain a constant body temperature needed for hemostasis. This high boiling point also creates another important means of regulating temperature by cooling the body down. Because if there is an extreme amount of heart radiating into the body the water will simply evaporate taking heat energy with it. Water also provides the building blocks of most tissues. Because of water there is fluidly in muscle and connective tissue. Using water to reduce diffusion difference has led many animals to evolve highly specialized organ systems such as mammal digestive systems. Water provides the base for fluid matrix such as blood where can hemoglobin exists and again take advantage of the short diffusion distance and move gasses through the body. Osmosis occurs though water and is necessary for organ systems to exchange nutrients. Other body fluids such as mucus is mostly water and is used for lubrication. Water is high in oxygen and can be broken down to power cellular respiration. Finally water is key in the osmoregulatory system where nitrogen based wastes are passed and ion concentration are kept in balance insuring proper nervous system
