In the narrative above, the presence of music has a noticeable impact on the way the narrative itself is perceived. By combining all the elements of the piece October by Whitacre, the story is intensified in the way that it brings each aspect of the narrative into life. As the piece begins, the audience can experience the warmth that is brings. The same warmth is present at the beginning of the narrative. Without the presence of music, this narrative would have been simply ordinary, most individuals would not be able to devote their attention to it.…
As an unconditional admirer of Ben Wheatley’s work, I must admit I was expecting slightly more from “High-Rise”, an impractical adaptation of J.G Ballard’s 1975 novel of the same name. However, I'm not disappointed either because I enjoyed the bizarre, lustful, surreal, and psychedelic tones that the film has to offer, in addition to a mordant humor, which is already a staple in Mr. Wheatley’s projects (“Sightseers”, “A Field in England”). Set in a dystopian near future that is evocative of the 70’s, the film stars Tom Hiddleston in the mesmerizing role of Dr. Robert Laing, an unceremonious physiologist who is more than happy to move into a monumental apartment building where the social class of a person determines in which floor they live. There, he meets a bunch of curious characters, starting with the voluptuous Charlotte (Sienna Miller) who lives right above him and was telling…
One of the examples was of a women’s perception of music, a violin caresses her face, and trumpets send chills down her spine, whereas another of the examples says that he can taste steak as a rich blue, and that "Mango sherbet appears as a wall…
Orange is the New Black is a show that is not new to controversial issues and often displays them in the episodes to open up discussions about how Americans view and treat prisoners. Before watching and discussing Orange is the New Black with my peers, I originally saw the problems in the correctional system as issues that likely can never be improved and did not view the more emotional side of the problems, but now after talking with peers, I see how certain issues in prisons may need a more emotional outlook to comprehend and to think of solutions. The issues that Orange is the New Black showcases that I believe deserve more understanding and to be looked at in a different light are prison healthcare and race issues. Prison healthcare in…
The piece I selected was “Tout est Perplexe,” from the soundtrack of the Japanese animated film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. I selected this piece because it shows a dynamic internal contrast between a mild, lingering sadness and overwhelming depression. The piece starts of softly, with a single instrument playing most of the melody. Moreover, the melody itself is in the minor key, giving the music a sad quality, and it moves upwards in scale in a conjunct manner, so the music does not feel anxious, just sad, like a longing ache. After this section, there is a brief period of respite, where the melody becomes more complex, with several instruments coming together and playing an upwards and slightly more hopeful melody.…
The departure and return in this piece feels tangible, thereby eliciting a reaction. Even to the untrained ear, this is a beautiful piece of music. While listening to the music repeatedly, looking for answers to questions, the composition can be appreciated fully, as…

Fredi Pritchett Music 110-08B December 2, 106 J.S. Bach Mass in B Minor On November 5, 2016, I attended the J.S. Bach Mass in B Minor music concert at Converse College, featuring a performance by the Spartanburg Festival Chorus. I enjoyed the musical selections performed by the chorus and saw a few familiar faces of some of my classmates at the concert as well. The venue of the concert was very nice and a lot of older people attended the concert.…
Individually, the score plays a large part in the overarching themes of the film. This is highlighted in the audio track where there are 3 versions of the score named Okuribito: “On Record”, “Memory”, and “Ending” respectively. Each suggesting “the prevailing mood of a scene, and prompt of an appropriate emotional response from spectators.” (Fiscoff 2005,…
This piece has “characteristics of classic sonata form, and is similar in energy and length to such concert overtures as Shostakovich’s Festival Overture.” As with a typical sonata form, the piece is broken down into five main sections. The first introductory section features the opening horn fanfare and a full ensemble crescendo into the exposition. Starting at measure four, the first theme is articulated with tutti figures thru many different instruments. Immediately following that in measure twelve, we hear the inversion of that melody in the clarinets and alto saxophone. The inversion is then repeated in the upper woodwinds and in the cornet.…
Throughout the work, Wagner implements multiple musical techniques to make his composition “click”. From the start, the listener is called to action with shrill trills and glissandos in the high strings and woodwinds, creating a sense of heightening anxiety. Conversely, when the main motive sounds, Wagner utilizes French horns, trombones, and trumpets to convey the entrance of the heroes. In doing this, Wagner shows the sweeping effects orchestration can have: “…instruments [can] create a mood and sway the emotions.” (Wright 106).…
In the early 1940’s, Archibald John Motley Jr. produced a lively, celebrated painting. Motley was an African American artist that wanted to express his pride in the African American race. He believed that, “It is a culture that is exciting, dynamic, and purely their own” (Harlem). He expressed their culture by creating the piece, Nightlife, right after the Harlem Renaissance.…
