What would hurt worse? The gnawing feeling in the back of your mind, pacing back and forth, so consuming by worry that sleep becomes difficult and you start some unhealthy habits yourself. Glancing at your phone anxiously, your heart almost stopping in your chest every time you get a call. Or the gnawing feeling that consumes your mind, the begging. “Just a listen more.” Your lips chapped, skin pale, face gaunt, hands shaking. Children gape at you. Adults look at you with both pity and dismay when they give you fleeting glances. When they do look at you, through slitted eyes they see only one thing: a zombie. Or, more specifically, a druggie. As most people know, drugs are highly addictive. What most people don’t know is why. They send chemical messengers called neurotransmitters throughout your brain, flooding it with something called dopamine. So far it might not seem so bad. I mean, some people will act similarly if their mom grounds them or they can’t watch their favorite tv show for a few days. Consequently, there are almost infinite amounts of horrible and quite near grotesque side effects of drug abuse. Some of those include organ failure, which leads to an incredibly painful and relatively slow death. Others include intense diarrhea or constipation, excessive nausea/vomiting, early wrinkling/yellowing of the skin, cotton mouth, and hundreds of other and equally unpleasant effects. (Not to mention the sharing needles can spread numerous diseases including HIV and AIDS.
