The blacktop of the adjacent street steamed in the heat, almost beckoning a mirage to appear in place of the nursing home that sat on the corner – a small, one-story brick building that despite its beautiful flowers teeming with butterflies and hummingbirds seemed devoid of life. A lone car sat in the parking lot – a blue Toyota minivan which belonged to the family who had just entered the building: two energetic boys who looked longingly at the little league game, an overly-dressed…

Throughout the book he discussed how rapid the opiate addiction spread across the country, how young or old these people were, and the race that was mainly affected. That led me to the question, what actually is the average age group, race, and location of most of these opiate addictions. Opiates originally were prescribed to relieve acute pain, but over time it created the addiction and abuse of the drug. These people had their culture stripped away from them, and they were thrown out into the world without a clue about how to survive in it. The traumatic events that occurred at the residential schools gave countless victims PTSD leaving them to resort to substance abuse to smother their pain and causing many to die alone with no one to remember them. Examples of those affected by the actions of the priests and nuns who ran the schools can be found in Sammy Aandeg of Drew Hayden Taylor’s Motorcycles and Sweetgrass and in the Sugar Girl of Joseph Boyden’s…
