1. What is this report about?
Ecosystem services Ecosystem services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems. These include provisioning services, the commodities that people use such as fiber, food, timber, and water; regulating services that affect climate, disease, floods, wastes, and water quality; cultural services that provide recreational, aesthetic, and spiritual benefits; and supporting services that assist in soil formation, photosynthesis, and nutrient cycling. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment completed in 2005 found that overall people have made greater changes to ecosystems in the last half of the 20th century than at any time in human history. Overall these changes have enhanced human well-being, but have been accompanied by ever increasing degradation.

An important historical and environmental staple of North America, the American prairie was a biodiverse ecosystem that once thrived. Its complex polyculture system featured perennial plants that created a beautiful, flourishing landscape. With the introduction of advanced technology, farmers were able to change the prairie lands forever.…

The theme for Miller´s 2017 yearbook is a ecosystem theme. One reason the class decided on having a ecosystem theme yearbook, is a because almost every question asked the agree and disagree side came out to be almost even. A second reason the yearbook theme is ecosystems is because after philosophical chairs we took a survey on whether we should have a jungle or western theme yearbook and the answers were even. The teacher then stated that they both have on thing in common, which is ecosystems. Therefore the class decided on having a ecosystem theme…

Post Lab 3 – Ecosystem Management: The Oak Savannah at High Park 1. The upper ravine slope of High Park’s oak savannahs consist primarily of black and white oak, shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses. These ecosystems also have very dry and sandy soil, which has caused the oaks to adapt to low soil nitrogen availability levels. Furthermore, the plants found in these savannahs are dependent on frequent fires to clear out the invasive species so they do not have to compete for light and also to sustain their open canopies. This causes less organic matter to be deposited in the soil leading to nutrient-deficient soils.…

Malaria is one of the most prominent public health epidemic worldwide. It’s the leading cause of death and disease effecting half of the world’s population. According to World Health Origination (2013) 3.2 billion people live in areas at risk of malaria transmission in 106 countries and territories. Vulnerable populations such as rural poor, young children and expecting women who are more exposed to infection with the least access to services are at elevated risk for transmission of this deadly disease. The WHO (2013) also estimated 216 million clinical episodes and 445,000 deaths, including an estimated 91% of deaths in 2016 were in WHO African Region.…

Biodiversity is the measurement of how abundant variety of species is the population in an ecosystem. Habitats are greatly amplified by how many different species populate the area as the interconnectivity of food chains influences how well an ecosystem works. Not only does biodiversity effect specific ecosystems, it provides for humans as the value of global ecosystem services is estimated at $16-$64 trillion [1] meaning that reduction of biodiversity will result in major financial losses. A reduction of biodiversity effectively means a less profitable system because less is never more and removal of certain components in ecosystems will result in cataclysmic effects to all parts of that food chain as reduction of certain species will result…

Most everyone learns about the different types of ecosystems in elementary school. Even then, the one that always struck me as the most interesting was the rainforest. Environmental Data Analysis The school that I attended was Page High School, located in Page, Arizona. Page is located in Northern Arizona, established on a mesa on the Arizona-Utah border, and has a population of around seventy five hundred people. Based off the air quality report conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the two most present toxic chemicals present outside of the school are sulfuric acid and manganese. Sulfuric acid is found most commonly in fertilizer and explosive production, in the purification of petroleum, metal, and lead-acid batteries (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2009).…

Malaria has always interested me, due to how deadly it is causing massive deaths in third countries. I have always been told to stay away from mosquitoes because they transfer this disease, but why? What caused this disease to occur, so that is why I chose to do my paper on it. I would one day like to go to third world countries to help with doctors without borders, and wanted to know exactly what I have to watch out for and why. Malaria affects two main hosts; humans and female mosquitoes, Anopheles.…

Malaria, a disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes, is a topic that should be upheld to the topmost importance. However, there are countries in Africa that are suffering from this disease, Ghana being one of them. Malaria contributes greatly to the poor health state in Africa. For example, in Suntreso polyclinic and Agogo Presbyterian Hospital in Kumasi City (the second largest city in Ghana), when about five hundred patients were interviewed, 17% had severe malaria, 8% had moderate to severe malaria and 75% had regular malaria. Malaria is also responsible for 38,000 deaths per year and over 2,000 deaths in pregnant women, accounting for 9% of all deaths in pregnancy.…

The Earth is currently facing detrimental environmental issues. These issues have been evident for decades; however, many people have continuously denied them to be problematic or even their existence entirely. While these critics have managed to get away with the rejection of these problems for many years, it is no longer deniable that the issue of environmental degradation is very real and in need of immediate action. Much of the population has come to understand this, and have executed a variety of modest attempts to increase environmental sustainability. However, these efforts have demonstrated to be of minimal effect in solving the large-scale issues directly causing the degradation.…
