Essay#2 War has a significant impact on any nation during war, however, the effects of the war do not end when the fighting is done. The war shapes a country for decades following war if not forever. This can be seen following the end of World War 1 in 1918 and the end of World War 2 in 1945. The United States followed many of the same trends following both wars with some differences. The trends can mainly be found in regards to economic prosperity, social change, and foreign policy. Following WW1 there was initially a slowdown in the economy as the nation transformed from war production back to peacetime production. Houses and neighborhoods began to be constructed with assembly line techniques to keep up with the demand for new homes. Americans all began to move to the suburbs because now they all had cars to commute to work in. There was a sense of indulgence and an “eagerness to pursue pleasure” (Of the People). Which can be seen following both wars. People have been apart and haven't really been able to enjoy their lives with their families and have things that they want during the war. Then when the war ends they have money, there are innovative technologies and you are living the American dream. This indulgence leads to a trend of product cycles which still lives on today. Companies began to make products slightly different and improved every year or so to convince consumers to buy something new when what they have is just fine. A concept that a GM chief designer coined as “dynamic obsolescence”. This period was also a time of conformity. People all wanted to fit in and not seem different in part to not be accused of being a communist. They all drove the same cars, wore the same clothes, worked at the same companies and watched the same TV shows. Women's roles evolved during this time as well. Initially, they were the homemakers. They were expected to raise the children, clean and cook and have dinner ready for her husband when he comes home from work. However in part due to the growing …show more content…
After WW1 the US wanted to take an isolationist view and stay out of all foreign affairs. Following WW2 the United States became more focused on containment and preventing the spread of communism even if it involved getting involved in foreign affairs. Following WW1 the US attempted multiple things to try to prevent any more future wars. Including the Kellog-Briand Pact of 1928 which was a treaty which outlawed war as a strategy to settle disputes. The “Good Neighbor” policy intended to increase trade with Latin America. In addition, multiple neutrality agreements were signed in 1935,’36 and ‘37 to keep the US out of European conflicts. This can be seen in both Wilson's Fourteen Points and his main goal a League Of Nations which would mediate and resolve conflicts before they escalated to war, Following the second world war the United States isolationist pattern had ended with the US providing its European allies with $13 billion in reconstruction aid and the establishment of the United Nations in 1945. The United States found itself in a cold war with the Soviet Union and its allies. The US sought allies and formed alliances to help combat the spread of communism and protect itself from the Soviet Union. Which was also stockpiling arms amongst the increasing tensions of another world
