Economic Impact Of Mining In Australia

Decent Essays
The economic impact of mining these minerals is very positive for Australia; however, the environmental implications are also significant and must be considered. Only 0.02% of Australia’s land is devoted to mining, however, when the harmful gases that are produced through mining, extraction and refining processes of minerals are added with the environmental disturbance of real estate, farming, road construction and numerous other human activities, the effect on the environment can be very large, and hence regulations are in place to limit the mining industry.

    Taseko Fish Lake Analysis

Taseko should not be granted approval to build a mine around Fish Lake for three main reasons. Firstly, Taseko is a mining group that wants to start their development around Fish Lake but environmentalists and indigenous group, Tsilhoqot’in, claim that Taseko will cause irreparable damage to the water supply. I argue that Fish Lake is a common resource which means that the land has to be protected to ensure consumers does not over use it. Second, Fish Lake is a sacred land for the indigenous group Tsilhoqot’in. Lastly, Taseko would be contributing to the inequality that Aboriginal people have to deal with when the government wants to build on their territory.…

The Alberta oil sands are one of Canada’s largest sources of oil and may be the biggest petroleum deposit anywhere in the world. But the oil sands industry has a lot of environmental impacts. The oil sands are one of the major causes of air pollution in Canada and North America. A sticky mixture called Bitumen (which is also known as tar) doesn’t flow easily like petroleum or crude oil so companies have to resort to surface mining (strip or open pit mining) which is bad for the environment because it removes landscapes, agricultural lands and destroys forests which leads erosion and then when it rains it washes the topsoil into streams which pollutes the water. Another method is injecting steam to get it out of the Earth.…

Since the beginning of the coal mining industries in the 1800s, thousands of mines have been created, extracting the precious mineral, and then dumped, empty and hollow. Once industries finished with a certain area, it would be dropped and they would move on, drilling in another location. The act of reclaiming these mines did not come to light until 1977 when the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed by Congress after they saw the disruption in the environment. This act put a strain on the profits of many coal mining industries, such as Peabody Energy and Alpha Natural Resources. Now, Peabody Energy and Alpha Natural Resources wrongly reclaim their retired mines as a way to protect their profits, doing the bare minimum of reclamation.…

The Great Depression was a period of time that lasted from 19291939. All regions of the United States were hit hard some more than others. The Depression was a curious time in that it either created struggle in regions, or emphasized the struggle already present. The oil sands have received ample attention in recent years from the media and from various environmental agencies and groups due to “growing concern about a range of environmental impacts” (Jordaan 2012, p. 3611). These concerns are not without merit, as the ongoing development in the Alberta oil sands pose a significant threat to the environment.…
