The Bauhaus School of Design was founded in 1919 in the city of Weimar by Walter Gropius, a German architect. The Bauhaus school was created to combine the arts and crafts, technology and architecture disciplines to reach a common goal to unify creativity and the manufacturing objects, building and art. Walter Gropius decided to combine two of his schools, the Weimar Academy of Arts and the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts, into what he called the Bauhaus. He believed that by training the students in both fine art and design he would produce new artisans and designers who were gifted in creating useful and stunning objects. The instructors at the Bauhaus weren’t just teachers who loved art they were artists who were part of the German expressionism…

As the society entered to a new age known as “Modern”, the artistic approach to life also changed, introducing new artistic currents based on the Modernism. The appearance of forms that for decades were forbidden: pediments and arches, towers and domes, appear again during the postmodernism era. As Christian Norberg-Schulz stated, “Aren’t they just the manifestation of superficial nostalgia?”.1 Postmodernism came as a protest against the sterile emptiness of ‘late modern’ architecture, which lacks the satisfactory reference to everyday world of things. Modern architecture was always abstract and drew away from reality. It became non-figurative, as it abandoned ‘figures’ that constituted the basis of architecture of the past.2 The referred ‘architectural figure’ was a term coined by Paolo Portoghesi in the late 1970s to describe architectural design during Postmodernism, in which attempts were…

    Otti Berger's Credibility

As an inventor, Otti Berger is not so much concerned with expressing her subjectivity or inner self but concerned with inventing a new weaving process and protecting her identity and invention through patenting. Even though her road to patent wasn’t easy, Berger ultimately received two patents: one in Germany in 1934 and one in London in 1937 (p.56). Textile’s characteristics, such as functional, unremarkable, sometimes generic and mass-produced, often rendered textiles unattributed. Her motivation to seek patents comes primarily from her identity as a woman in a rather anonymous field of textile industry. She understood the difficulty of the under-recognized Bauhaus students and Bauhaus’ emphasis on the communal entity, which replaced the…

    1) This module covers 3 chapters, the first explores sculpture and installation, the second covers art pieces meant to play huge roles in daily life and rituals, and the third wraps things up with an exploration of the history of architecture and a curious look at where it’s headed. Chapter 11 discusses the different types of sculptures; in the round, relief (low and high) and the different techniques with which they are made: modeling, casting, assembling, and carving. In addition to technical aspects of sculpture making, this chapter also covers some of the common subject seen in sculptures, such as the human body. A phenomenal example of this is Quantum Cloud XX (tornado) by Antony Gormley. Stainless steel bars seem to explode around a vaguely…

    Goldberger Analysis

Paul Goldberger opens his essay by explaining the great depth that architecture emerges into art. My attention was immediately grabbed when he was explaining how architecture, “can be as tiny a gesture as painting the front door of a house red or grand as undertaking as creating the rose window of a cathedral”. He was explaining how architecture has no standard minimum or limitation within the design. Goldberger is supporting his evidence alongside how Frank Lloyd Wright explained how he modernized the American prairie. Goldberger explains how versatile architecture can be by comparing an architect’s style of design being implemented into a completely contradictory region and still coexisting.…

The study also analyses the response and approach taken by the architects to gently manoeuvre the design to suit the client’s needs without brazenly challenging the sentiments of the people and their culture. The first look of the house ties in neatly with the rest of the town, modern so at the outset it is assumed that the house does not tie in with the traditional and almost suppressed culture of the people, the rules of society or the place where it is built. All components of early modernism are used to create the first impression. The reinforced concrete frame structure, the rectangular shape, the use of white simple smooth unadorned walls, light, roof gardens, courtyards, straight lines and slanting planes but here the differences appear.…

Venturi, Complexity and Contradiction Venturi addresses the idea of how architecture promotes complexity and refers to it as an art. The art is in the process of construction and thinking when it comes to designing. He also expressed how he is against rationalization and rejecting complexity in architecture. I think he points out an interesting view when he says "I am for messy vitality over obvious unity", what I understand and find interesting about this is the idea of preferring the non-obvious over the simple, straightforward architecture. In my opinion this is what makes architecture interesting and exciting.…

Good design is complex and contradictory this is supported by the statement “less is a bore” and that less doesn 't mean more. By having less you lose the interesting aspects of complexity. Venturi points that the richness and complexity of modern experience needs to be expressed in our architecture. This is further supported by the statement that function doesn 't follow form and that ornaments are valuable for architecture. Ornaments in architecture have meaning, is intrinsically symbolic, and can be used to communicate ideas.…

I never intended to study architecture. When I was applying to colleges, I intended to study kinesiology and psychology. Studying dance and photography when I was younger gave me a desire to be expressive, and even though I felt a connection to the physicality of dance through kinesiology, I knew I wanted to do something that fulfilled that same sense of expression. It wasn’t until I studied architecture that I noticed some of its similarities with dance. Dance is expressive of the body, but it is also an observation of people’s interaction with each other and with their surroundings, a study of people’s movement through space.…
