Unfortunately, I think it is very unfair that children with special needs can be denied of treatment because of their family’s inability to pay. Derman-Sparks & Edwards (2010) express how many people think that poor low income families are living in poverty because they are too lazy to work for their money, when most of the time this is not the case. Most people actually work very hard to get themselves above the federal poverty line but their wages prevent them from doing so, which in turn, creates a struggle for them to pay for medical bills that are necessary for the the quality of life for their child with special needs. Also, I understand that meeting the needs of a child with a disability, can be very costly, time consuming, and frustrating for the parent. Most parents need to stay home with their child with special needs because they need constant care, which makes it difficult for one parent or the other to have a full time job, and financially provide for the needs of the family. This situation creates an even bigger problem for low income families with children who have special needs because not only do they struggle to pay for the cost of living they struggle to care for their child as well. Derman-Sparks and Edwards (2010) outline a few different approaches to create a successful learning environment for children. The approach I find most equitable to my future profession is to create “the same high expectations for children from every family.” I believe that I can incorporate this attitude in my work because all children with special needs deserve equal treatment, and children from poorer backgrounds should be pushed just as hard towards their goals as children from higher-income families would be.
